As a homeowner, one of the most irritating issues you face is pests. There are many different types of pests. You may have a variety of insects, or you may be dealing with larger pests, such as racoons. In the worst cases, failing to control pests might even result in damage to your home. Here are some things you can do to get rid of these pests.
Use an outdoor perimeter spray to keep insects from entering your home. Windows, doors, foundations and steps should all be treated with the product. Be sure to keep a lookout for cracks that may allow pests to enter your home. It can be very effective if you fill these spaces with caulk.
There are dogs that are specially trained to detect termites. An actual human inspector is only capable of verifying the safety of about one-third of the home. However, trained dogs can verify that the entire home is safe. They can smell methane gas that the termites leave behind when they eat wood.
Do you have a recurring problem with fruit flies? The issue may be your drain. Place plastic wrap over your drain, keep it there for a handful of days, and see if any flies have begun appearing. If you find some, pour a little boiling water down the drain and then scrub it well. This should prevent them from breeding in there.
Clear away brush from the perimeter of your home. Insects that nest in wild brush will enter your home if they are close enough. Placing bushes too close to the house is an open invitation for pests to invade.
If your home is susceptible to mice and/or rats, never plant trees close to the house. This makes an easy way for these rodents to climb up and enter your home using the attic or roof. Put the trees around 15 feet from the house.

Start from the beginning. Try to keep the pest from eating, and you can starve it out. One reason you may have a problem is because your house provides food, water or shelter for a pest. Search for and eliminate leaks, exposed food and structural damage that allows pests to enter your home.
If you are trying to get rid of mice, mint may help. A group of plants situated along your home's foundation will repel them. This will make the foundation undesirable for mice to live in. If mice are posing a problem, drop mint leaves in troublesome areas. This will keep mice away a lot of the time, but you have to use fresh mint leaves.
If you participate in recycling, be sure to rinse all recyclable items carefully. One thing you must rinse are those cans that have high levels of sugar. Get the soda pop completely out of the can. Then you can store it in your home or garage without worrying about it attracting pests.
No matter whether you can see signs of infestation or not, have the entire residence examined anyway. If any part of your house is underground, subterranean termites may eat some of your home that you aren't in that often. Give your crawl space and basement a look over.
Does your home have brown recluse spiders? If so, trap them with sticky traps. These spiders are poisonous and difficult to kill with pest-repellent chemicals. They tend to appear at night, looking for food. Put the traps behind furniture to get them where they live.
If all else fails, you can turn to an electronic device to get rid of pests. These are placed in your home and buzz to scare rodents away. Humans cannot hear the sound, and it does not harm pets or humans in any way. Rodents will leave the area of the noise, since they do not like it.
